Brave Hearts Theater, Madison, WI May 1996 Jason Lee & Connelly Developed out of two sets of personal work. Jason was building sculptural work with included salt and honey. I was doing repetitive tast work and performing BINDING. In a short conversation, he and I decided to do a piece that would combine our work. He said he would like to wash his hands in salt until they crack and bleed. I said if he did that, I would bandage them. The first performance was at a student performance festival. The piece was in the basement of Brave Hearts Theater. I break a fifty pound block of salt with a hammer, then grind the chunks into a powder with a mortar and pestle. Jason washes his hands in the powered salt. When his hands bleed, he dips his hands in honey. After allowing the excess to run off, I wrap his hands in homemade bandages. Run time: 4 hours. Jason Lee and I performed this piece four times. Each time the piece was different. The changes were related to the space, the audience, or the mood of the performers. |
